HSA/FSA
A health savings account (HSA) and a flexible spending account (FSA) let you set money aside from your paycheck before tax and spend it on qualified medical care. For a lot of households that is the cheapest money they have, and every year more of it goes toward staying healthy rather than treating something that has already gone wrong.
Fitness sits in an interesting place in those rules. A gym membership is not automatically an eligible expense — but it can become one when a licensed provider determines that exercise is treating a diagnosed medical condition and documents that in a Letter of Medical Necessity. Weight management, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiac rehabilitation and recovery from injury are the situations that come up most often.
How it usually works
1. Talk to your provider. The determination is theirs, not ours and not your plan administrator's. If exercise is part of how they are treating you, ask whether they are willing to write a Letter of Medical Necessity naming the condition, the recommended activity and how long the recommendation runs.
2. Check the rules of your own plan. HSA and FSA plans are not identical. Your administrator can tell you what documentation they need, whether they want it up front or at reimbursement, and whether they pay the provider directly or refund you afterwards. Ask before you pay, not after.
3. Keep the paperwork. Save the letter and every receipt for the period it covers. If your plan is ever reviewed, the letter and the receipts are what settle the question.
4. Ask us for what you need. We can provide an itemised statement of what you paid and when, which is the document most administrators ask for. Membership dues, personal training and recovery services all appear on it separately, because plans often treat them differently.
What we can and cannot do
We are a gym, not a benefits administrator. We cannot tell you whether your expense will be approved, we cannot issue a Letter of Medical Necessity, and we cannot promise a particular tax outcome — anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing on your behalf. What we can do is give you clean records and answer questions about what a membership actually includes.
If you are working through this and need a statement, a breakdown of what your plan covers at Krazybee Fit, or a copy of an invoice, get in touch and we will put it together for you.
